CHAPTER

—9—

Her first thought was Has Finn been cooking?

This made her smile. That he hadn’t been well and had dragged himself out of bed and actually made dinner, just so she didn’t have to, it was a nice thing for him to do.

As she hung her coat in the little cupboard, she noticed the house wasn’t as warm as it might be if someone had been cooking. Take-away then? she thought as she removed her outdoor shoes, eagerly anticipating her slippers.

“Finn, are you in?” she shouted, noting there were no kids running to greet her at the door, which was the norm. Another nice thought crossed her romantic mind. Maybe he’d left them at her mum’s, where they went after school. A take-away, no kids… I know where this is leading. Dirty bastard, she thought with a salacious grin. It had been a while since they’d spent any quality time together.

She popped her head into the living room. The smile on her face was so wide it was in danger of splitting her head in two. She was expecting something goofy happening in there, like Finn, wearing nothing but a tie, sat at the dining table with a large slap-up meal set out before him.

The room was empty; however, she could still smell the food. She looked up the stairs and shouted him again. “Finn, are you up there?”

She noted then that the smell wasn’t quite as delicious as she’d first assumed. Now it smelt old. Like how a cold burger and fries from Finn’s favourite outlet smelt if it had been left for an hour or so.

It was beginning to offend her nose, like it was crawling up her nostrils and leaving a residue up there, coating them somehow. It was beginning to turn her stomach.

“Jesus Christ!” she shouted, more in disappointment than anger. The small pang of excitement—and could she say horniness? Yes… why not horniness—was gone, leaving only a black hole where there once was hope. “What have you been doing in here? Have you been eating upstairs? Have you even been to work?”

There was no answer.

“Finn, are you even in?” she shouted, holding her nose, as the smell seemed to be becoming physical.

She stepped on the first stair, huffed at the silence she received as a reply, and began her accent. The stink got heavier the further up she went. It was so bad near the top that merely holding her nose was no longer cutting it. Whatever the smell was, she could taste it and feel the greasiness in her mouth.

“Finn? I swear… if you’re stinking up that bedroom, I’ll…” She didn’t finish her threat as she saw the wet marks on the carpet between the bedroom and the bathroom. “Fucking hell?” she hissed. “Can’t you take a towel into the bathroom with you?” she continued, still holding her nose.

She tutted as she entered the bathroom and saw the mess in there. The wetness from the carpet continued onto the tiled floor, only there, it changed. It turned thick and off white, like he’d squeezed her body cream all over the floor.
